Free Webinar: FHWA Office of Safety - February 8th, 2012

The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Safety will hold a webinar on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time.  This webinar, on the heels of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) annual meeting, will highlight some of the programs State and Local transportation professionals learned about at TRB.  Specifically, we will be focusing on aspects of the Highway Safety Manual, Safety Data Community of Practice, Roadway Safety Data Partnership Capability Assessment, and Fundamental Data Elements.

Our first quarter 2012 newsletter is now available

The TRB Highway Safety Performance Committee Newsletter for the first quarter of 2012 is now available for download from our committee website (right-click and select "Save As": PDF). The newsletter includes a letter from our committee chair, highlights some of the ongoing efforts and available products. The newsletter also gives information for our activities during the TRB 2012 Annual Meeting, and much more.

Extended NCHRP 17-38 are now available - compliments of ALDOT & VDOT

During 2009 and 2010, Dr. Karen Dixon, Principal Investigator of NCHRP 17-38, developed three spreadsheets in a volunteer effort to support training efforts on the first edition of the HSM. The extended Highway Safety Manual (HSM) predictive analysis spreadsheets represent updates to these three spreadsheets. The update was funded through a partnership between the Alabama Department of Transportation and Virginia Department of Transportation. These agencies are releasing these tools for use by other individuals and agencies to support the implementation of the HSM across the nation.

NCHRP Project #20-24 (068) developed a crash cost application tool that is now available.

Roadway Safety Data Partnership - Midpoint Report Now Available

The Roadway Safety Data Partnership is a collaborative effort between FHWA and states to develop "robust data-driven safety capabilities" (http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/rsdp/index.cfm). FHWA releases the HSM Implementation Guide for Managers

AASHTO Highway Safety Manual

In June 2010 AASHTO published the first edition of the Highway Safety Manual. Access the public AASHTO HSM site for more information. AASHTO created a HSM User Discussion Forum where users can ask questions. The website also has an introduction to the HSM in PDF format.

Goal 2 of the AASHTO Subcommittee on Safety Management Strategic Plan focusses on the institutionalization of the HSM and its associated analytical tools to support data-driven decisions; and the advancement of the science of safety.

A HSM Pooled Fund Study was initiated in 2011. Read more about the study and opportunities for study participation at the FHWA Transportation Pooled Fund Program Website.
